Four plants to bring autumn colour to your garden

As the leaves turn and the days grow shorter, there are plenty of ways to keep your garden looking beautiful. Local gardener Sophie Cook shares four plants that will bring vibrant colour to outdoor spaces this autumn and beyond.

While spring and summer often steal the show when it comes to gardening, autumn has its own spectacular palette. From fiery reds and oranges to rich ruby tones, choosing the right plants can transform your garden just as the temperatures begin to drop.

We spoke to local gardener Sophie Cook for her recommendations on plants that will add colour, interest and structure to your garden throughout the cooler months.

Heuchera ‘Autumn Leaves’

For colour at a lower level, Heuchera ‘Autumn Leaves’ is a lovely option. Also known as coral bells, this semi-evergreen perennial is prized for its changing foliage, which shifts from bright red in spring to taupe or pale brown in summer before deepening into rich ruby red in autumn.

Its colourful leaves provide interest in borders and planting containers alike, making it a versatile choice for smaller gardens, patios and spaces where you want to introduce seasonal colour without planting a tree or large shrub.

Amelanchier lamarckii

For a tree that offers something special in every season, Amelanchier lamarckii is a wonderful choice. Its elegant, architectural shape provides year-round interest, but it really comes into its own in autumn, when its foliage puts on a striking display of colour. It is an excellent option for adding height, structure and seasonal beauty to your garden.

Cornus ‘Midwinter Fire’

If you want to keep your garden looking colourful well into winter, Cornus ‘Midwinter Fire’ is a brilliant choice. This award-winning dogwood is known for its fiery stems, which bring vibrant shades of orange, yellow and red to the garden when much of the surrounding landscape has faded. Its colourful stems become particularly eye-catching as the leaves fall, making it a fantastic way to brighten up borders during the darker months.

Acer palmatum ‘Osakazuki’

Nothing quite compares to a Japanese maple when it comes to autumn colour. Acer palmatum ‘Osakazuki’ is one of the finest varieties, celebrated for its spectacular display of brilliant crimson and scarlet-red foliage.

Its large, seven-lobed leaves emerge fresh green in spring and retain their lush colour throughout summer before transforming into a dazzling autumn display. A real statement plant, it is ideal for creating a focal point in the garden, where its vibrant foliage can take centre stage.

Make the most of autumn colour

You don't need a complete garden makeover to enjoy the beauty of autumn. A carefully chosen tree, a colourful shrub or a few foliage-rich perennials can make a real difference, bringing warmth and interest to your outdoor space as the seasons change.

With Sophie Cook's recommendations, you can create a garden that looks just as inviting in autumn and winter as it does during the warmer months.
